Its because Wikipedia changed from UFC Fight Night 172 to 173 in the last minute.

I wish there was a different source for the fight cards that everybody used but unfortunately scene goes by Wikipedia title of event.

You make sense of this:

And most of all, why doesn't UFC have a proper website with fight cards? Why do we use an external website?

I suppose that a proper way of naming UFC Fight Night events could also be

Promotion name
Date
Title
Quality
Group

This would make a typical UFC fight night event release title something like

UFC.Fight.Night.2020.07.18.Figueiredo.vs.Benavidez.2.1080p.WEB-DL.H264-GROUP

But regarding PPV's...

UFC.251.2020.07.18.Usman.vs.Masvidal.1080p.HDTV.x264-GROUP

...looks a little confusing so date could be omitted on numbered events

UFC.251.Usman.vs.Masvidal.1080p.HDTV.x264-GROUP

Just thinking loud here....

UFC calls this Fight Island 2 so it could also be

UFC.Fight.Night.Fight.Island.2.1080p.WEB-DL.H264-GROUP

I suppose. But without the year it can be confusing.

UFC.Fight.Night.2020.Fight.Island.2.1080p.WEB-DL.H264-GROUP

Seems slightly better then in my humble opinion.

But all that said... scene will most likely continue following Wikipedia event title on the day of the release whatever I say

Turns out I had it right all this time:

UFC Fight Night: Figueiredo vs. Benavidez 2 (also known as UFC Fight Night 172 and UFC on ESPN+ 30)

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/UFC_Fight ... enavidez_2

Some smart Wikipedia contributor must have changed it to 173 after the fights started and then scene saw the incorrect number and used it. It was then changed back to 172 on Wikipedia after releases where made. Now I have to go through the boring and time-craving job of changing all titles on all torrents, posts and titles everywhere AGAIN.

And after next UFC comes:

UFC Fight Night: Holm vs. Aldana (also known as UFC Fight Night 173 and UFC on ESPN+ 31)

So what are scene going to do now? Release it as UFC Fight Night 173 PROPER or REAL or something else?

In the end it has to do with Wikipedia not being a proper source. How can we rely on a website that anybody can change at any time?

Now its starting to get really annoying "UFC Fight Night: Lewis vs. Oleinik (also known as UFC Fight Night 174, UFC on ESPN+ 32 and UFC Vegas 6)"
Four different names for the same event.

I think the scene groups should continue to label the events like PPV = UFC #, ESPN events = UFC on ESPN # and lastly all the ESPN+ events are UFC Fight Night # or you could rename them all UFC on ESPN+ # but for my archives I keep them as Fight Night then the #. Does not matter to me if the main event is in the title or not.

Thank you for your input!

I really respect your opinion and I have a similar thoughts, but it really doesn't matter much what we think in the end. I wish they never started with the "on ESPN" naming but it's too late now :P

Scene has followed Wikipedia for over a decade. So Wikipedia kind of rules what the event name and number should be. Its not feasible to go back and change ALL the events in the past to have new numbers. It would be madness.

So our choices are:

1. Continue to follow Wikipedia event naming structure:
UFC PPV has just a number in the order the PPV are broadcast. UFC Fight Nights have a number in the order the events where broadcast, except when the main card is broadcast on ESPN (not ESPN+), then they get a number in the order of ESPN broadcast events.

2. Use the UFC official event name. For example:
UFC Fight Night Jacksonville Smith vs. Teixeira
or possibly
UFC Fight Night 2020 Jacksonville Smith vs. Teixeira.

3. Use the date. For example:
UFC Fight Night 2020 05 14 Smith vs. Teixeira

What we can NOT do is take a random number and add it. It either has to be in the Wikipedia order that we followed for over a decade, or option 2 or 3.
