Not to dampen the fun here, but to be honest, they're not that wrong.

Science has become politicised and commercialised to a large degree, and more and more we are ignoring pure science in favour of practical science. How else could the global warming debate still be going on unless the science itself is ignored?

Scientists are very much becoming like priests. They are finding it harder and harder to accept they don't know all the answers, and are digging their heels in harder and harder to avoid having to change their beliefs.

If you take the "standard model" of cosmology for example, there are huge holes in the theory that scientists are now saying don't matter. Dark Energy alone screws up the "standard model" so thoroughly, that it is basically being ignored. The reason? Because the "standard model" seems so elegant and complete and fits in with everyone's views.. if you're a creationist, for example, all you have to do is say god made the bang, and scientists can't argue.

The "standard model" became standard not because it had the most truth, but because it stepped on the fewest toes. Scientists lie all the time, including to themselves. This is not to say science is bad, but scientists are human, and we humans have a tendency to believe we are right and others wrong, regardless of the evidence.

Now here is the real crux of the matter... we still don't KNOW how a magnet works. We believe we have the answer, but that answer doesn't seem to fit in with other things we know properly, so like Relativity we just ignore the small error and say it's good enough for practical purposes. In this case I am talking about the difficulty of explaining forces etc at both the quantum level and the macro level with the same theory. Until one theory explains everything, our knowledge is not complete, and therefore possibly slightly or even largely wrong.

I love science, but its really true that the more we know about how things work, the more we realize that we dont know shit
