According to California State Athletic Commission Executive Officer George Dodd, Chael Sonnen has been notified that he failed post-fight drug screening following his loss to Anderson Silva at UFC 117, which was held Aug. 7 at the Oracle Arena in Oakland, Calif.

In a conversation the day before, Dodd declined to comment on the situation, other than answering that all fighters from UFC 117 had passed drugs-of-abuse scans, but that the commission was still waiting on performance-enhancing drug screens from the event.

Dodd did not state which banned substance was red-flagged, but with a clean drugs-of-abuse scan it is clear the positive test was for a performance-enhancing substance.

Ed Soares hits the nail on the head with his comment:

"If it’s true, I feel really bad for him," said Soares. "I know he did it to himself but it is really sad, he put on such a great performance that night. It is just a shame it will be tarnished."

Almost 24 minutes of dominating the champ coupled with his famous pre-fight trash talk brought him a ton of new fans and even netted him a high-profile rematch for early 2011. Even though Sonnen lost that bout, it was by far the best performance of his career, but that failed drug test tarnishes everything. He will likely get fined and suspended for this, making it likely that the fight gets postponed, or even canceled. Either way, even if the UFC decides to go on with the bout, the rematch certainly loses a lot of its luster.

I just cant believe someone is as stupid as drawing a lot of attention to himself if he is using ped's its just so unlogically stupid I really hope its all just a big joke. On the other hand should it turn out he used it, wich it probably will, then I must say that hes a f**ing idiot! Imo until it is legal there is no excuse to use a performance enhancing drug under any other circumstances then a medical one that doesnt have to do with your performance as a fighter. If they legalize it or not is another story and Im not for that either, but the fact remains that now its illegal and anyone who uses it is a dam cheater!

Well we all know Sonnen is an expert at all aspects of politician-style talk, including backpedaling, making excuses, and playing the "blame game"(pointing fingers, etc) when he makes mistakes. As such, I'm eagerly awaiting his official response to this.
On what Dent said about certain PED's being used for medical purposes, someone was talking to me about this the other day. The typical anabolic steroid, artificial testosterone, has many medicinal purposes for people with all kinds of mild to severe illnesses. This is due to the male body's lack of ability to produce natural testosterone as it ages. It is however very performance-enhancing, and therefore illegal in most sports. I'll be interested to see what the drug he tested positive for was. Did it have a medical use, or was it a straight up PED with little to no medical uses? And that brings me back to my first statement: when the info of what he tested positive for gets out, how will that affect his response(es)?
As much as I hate Sonnen for his ego-maniacal personality, I had respect for his abilities as an athlete. I really thought he was one of the hardest working, most talented take-down/ground-and-pound(what some refer to as the style Mark Coleman made popular) fighters in the sport today.

More details emerge on the Chael Sonnen drug saga as George Dodd, the CSAC official that first alerted the media on the failed drug test, talked to Lance Pugmire of the LA Times, and said that Chael tested positive for a "natural steroid", and it happened on his pre-fight drug test.

He talked about it in detail, and says that the fighter is also looking at a 1-year suspension and a $2500 fine.
