Bantamweight Anthony Leone (8-0 MMA, 0-0 WEC) has signed a four-fight deal with World Extreme Cagefighting and makes his promotional debut later this month when he meets fellow promotional newcomer Renan Barao (20-1 MMA, 0-0 WEC) on the WEC 49 preliminary card.
Ryan Ciotoli of Bombsquad Sports Management today alerted MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com) of Leone's signing and debut. A source close to the event said verbal agreements are in place, though bout agreements have not been signed.
WEC 49 takes place June 20 at Rexall Place in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada.
As MMAjunkie.com recently reported, Barao's original opponent, Clint Godfrey, was forced off the card due to an undisclosed injury. Leone takes his spot.
Leone enters the WEC with a perfect 8-0 record in a variety of organizations, including the popular Northeast-based World Championship Fighting. Most recently, he topped Tateki Matsuda (4-1 at the time) via split decision in a five-round title fight to win a belt with the Massachusetts-based Xtreme Championship Fight League.
The 20-year-old New York native is well-versed in Brazilian jiu-jitsu and has posted five of his eight career wins via submission.
Barao, meanwhile, enters the WEC with a remarkable 20-fight win streak. The Brazilian dropped his professional debut in 2005 but hasn't lost a fight since then. Included in Barao's win total are a pair of single-night, four-man tournament victories. In total, 14 of Barao's win have come by stoppage with five via knockout and nine by submission.
