The UFC announced UFC 112 yesterday at a press conference held in Abu Dhabi. We didn’t really learn anything new other than the event will be held outdoors at the Concert Arena in Ferrari World (artist’s rendition) on Yas Island. Both Anderson Silva and BJ Penn will put their title up for grabs against Vitor Belfort and Frankie Edgar, respectively, and Renzo Gracie will make his UFC debut against Matt Hughes. The event will be held on April 10.
"We're going to have a big press conference in Abu Dhabi on Wednesday, with our new partners from the region, Flash," Marshall Zelaznik, the UFC's managing director of international expansion said to multiple media outlets. "[Zuffa CEO] Lorenzo [Fertitta] and myself will be there with some of the biggest names on the UFC roster. I don't want to give away the official announcement, but this will be a very unique show and not just because the card itself will be as good as any in UFC history."
Dave Meltzer from Yahoo! Sports clarifies what Zelaznik meant by UFC 112 being a "unique show" saying:
"The show is scheduled to be the first outdoor event in UFC history, as there is no suitable indoor arena for such an event."
UFC middleweight champion Anderson Silva will be returning from elbow surgery to defend his title against Vitor Belfort in one main event while BJ Penn will look to hold off Frankie Edgar in a lightweight title bout in the other main event.
